The journey begins as the Halfling, Dwarf, Elf and Gnome embark on a pilgrimage to some shrine of Torm on top of a mountain. The Dwarf leads the way, being a Cleric of Torm and he has hired an Elven bodyguard and also dragged along the Halfling Swashbuckler on a misguided mission of atonement. The Wizard… he’s just in it for the kicks.
The mountain is nothing to write home about – it’s rather rocky and barren. Barren, aside from the odd dead giant in front of a fissure in the mountainside. This giant has carelessly discarded a gargantuan halberd and is wearing some magical armour and has some unreadable notes in his pocket. We don’t quite know what to make of this, so we duck inside to take shelter from the oncoming storm.
So into the fissure we go and find a large chamber with two doors. Deciding on a ‘turn about’ system of opening doors, being as THERE’S NO FREAKING ROGUE, the Halfling goes first at opening a door. Opening the North door we find a black, silent wall ahead of us. After some deliberation, the Halfling steps through and into… A SPHERE OF ANNIHILATION. Kidding, it’s just another room. Too bad there’s absolutely no way of going back. Not without some serious earth moving equipment and pneumatic drills, etc.
We are not alone… There are Orcs here in the darkness. Thankfully the swashbuckler knows Orcish and is adept at bluffing. Turns out you can’t really bluff Orcs who have lost the will to live. So it gets nasty – the Halfling is ready to show these ugly pigfaces what-for, but is intercepted by the warrior at the cleric’s behest. He even gives them some rations!
Ah well, we open a door to the North. All but the Halfling get a blast of a Burning Hands trap. You don’t survive out on the high seas by blindly walking into every trap… So anyway, there are some moldy sacks. Nothing could possibly go wrong… The dwarf and the elf are choked by spores, though.
Moving on to the next door, there’s a big pile of kobold bodies. This sickens pretty much everyone, so we move on back to the moldy room. At the end of this is a door. It’s trapped of course, but the dwarf sets that one off. Excellent, so the Halfing walks through. HEY WHAT? It’s still active and gets the Halfling too. She finds a secret door, so all is good.
Back to our Orc friends. They claim responsibility for the kobold massacre. They also didn’t tell us about the traps. The warrior has had enough of the sneaky buggers and we make short work of them. See guys? Listen to the Halfling.
Next room has a dead Orc with a spear in him. We leave him be and go through the next door. No one bothers to look at the ceiling, so it’s only natural that a Darkmantle should attack from there. It only half kills us before we take it down. What’s next? A rat swarm of course. This one nearly finishes us, but we manage to beat it into submission.
We retreat to the room protected by the acid arrow and rest for the day.
